04 December 2001: my dinner with liki and neon.

too bad 'cause i'm fond of janelle
oh yeah i'm makin' a fool of myself
oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah
oh yeah she's so swell
janelle janelle janelle janelle

why the hell did i ever sell my jawbreaker lp's? "chesterfield king" was such a great song, and 24 hour revenge therapy was such a great album. what the hell ever happened to janelle? i had some things she made, and they were called tales from blarg. who the hell is minding the shop? certainly not i.

niki and leon were going to the party for the closing of bmg's san francisco branch, so they asked if i cared to tag along and have dinner with them. but niki was car sick, so they decided to skip the party and just go to dinner. they chose a pizza parlor in albany, of all towns. then niki said she wanted to go to a bar called the hotsy totsy. it turned out to be just a block away from albany bowl. jared had his going-away bowling party there, but i couldn't go because of my damned wisdom teeth. the totsy bartender was this drunk old lady who danced around to rod stewart and got all the measurements way wrong. she must have served a lot of drinks with ash in them, too, since she never ever ever put her cigarette down. maybe instead of floor mats, cars should have trays of kitty litter on the floor, just in case. niki and leon went home, and it was still early.

i decided to go over to the edinburgh castle and see the cave-ins. jaime from #sign was there and told me he had a copy of wax museum at his house and that he liked it. i was horrified and wanted to turn on my heels and run. you could cut this insecurity with a butter knife. the cave-ins turned out to be ok. omnibus usually picks good bands, and the shins last weekend were rad, too.

niki and leon played in a talulah gosh tribute band as part of the loft's halloween show in sacramento. it was delayed for about a month, but it was worth the wait and i was eagerly looking forward to it. they played talulah, my boy says, i can't get no satisfaction (thank god), and steaming train. i think they picked the songs with the simplest lyrics because most of talulah gosh's lyrics were damned inscrutable. anyway, they were great!! it was a lot of fun, they said a few things between songs in british accents, and i took a lot of pictures. some other bands did tributes to love & rockets, ESG, the angry samoans... and i thought the redd kross and van halen tributes were especially good. denise was at the show, and i asked her to show me the knife. and i had alan show me the fingers. denise didn't want to show me the knife, but i begged and begged and promised that i only wanted to look and not touch, just to see if the story was true. as soon as she pulled it out, i grabbed it. but she wouldn't let go. so we just stood there having a tug-of-war over a little red swiss army knife. then we headed over to the capitol garage cafe for the rock*a*teens + cave-ins + ski instructors show, which was alright. mostly we just sat around talking, being sleepy, trying to relax, and watching matty rob get totally trashed and crazy. i think i saw eleven or twelve bands in one night, altogether. i'm glad that i got to hang out with niki and leon this weekend.
